Specialized Approaches

Our team uses a variety of specialized modalities to support the healing of trauma.

Acceptance + Commitment therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) encourages people to embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them. ACT develops psychological flexibility, combining mindfulness skills with the practice of self-acceptance. When aiming to be more accepting of your thoughts and feelings, commitment plays a key role. ACT helps you commit to facing a problem head-on rather than avoiding your stresses.

Attachment-Based Therapy

Attachment therapy explores how one’s childhood experiences might impact their ability to form meaningful bonds as adults. This can be helpful for anyone struggling to foster deep connections with others or who need help rebuilding trust in relationships.

Brainspotting (BSP)

Brainspotting gives a therapist access to a client’s brain and body processes to help access unprocessed trauma. It’s effective for a variety of emotional and somatic conditions, including helping people identify and heal underlying trauma that contributes to anxiety, depression and other behavioral conditions. It can also be used with performance and creativity enhancement.

dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

DBT teaches people how to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, regulate their emotions, and improve their relationships with others. It can help people who have difficulty with emotional regulation or are exhibiting self-destructive behaviors (such as eating disorders, addictions or self harm).

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR targets past emotional experiences and memories that still cause disturbance today. By orchestrating the brain’s natural ability to process emotional experiences, it can diminish the intensity of troublesome memories and produce emotional relief. While EMDR was developed for use with trauma, it has been found to be useful for many other concerns, including anxiety, depression, panic, and grief and loss.

The Gottman Method

The Gottman Method is a couples therapy approach that aims to disarm conflicting verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy, and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS believes – and normalizes – that we are all made up of multiple parts, and under them is a person’s core or true Self. Like members of a family, these inner parts can take on extreme roles or subpersonalities. Each part has its own perspective, interests, memories, and viewpoint. IFS believes that every part has a positive intent, even if its actions are counterproductive and/or cause dysfunction. IFS promotes internal connection and harmony to bring the mind back into balance, allowing us to become integrated and whole. In IFS all parts are welcome.

Polyvagal theory

Polyvagal Theory has been described as the “science of feeling safe.” It offers precise science to understanding how the vagus nerve, a part of our nervous systems, relates to our human ability to connect and communicate with one other. Polyvagal Theory helps us understand our human nervous system and how it responds to stimuli in terms of varying degrees of safety and danger.

Schema Therapy

Schema therapy can help people identify thought and behavior patterns underlying and perpetuating mental health struggles. Schemas that are targeted in treatment are enduring and self-defeating patterns that typically begin early in life. These patterns consist of dysfunctional thoughts and feelings, have been repeated and elaborated upon, and pose obstacles for accomplishing a person’s goals and getting one’s needs met. Examples of schema beliefs include “I am unlovable,” “I’m a failure,” “I will never get my needs met,” etc.

Sensorimotor psychotherapy (SP)

SP addresses trauma and attachment issues through a holistic approach that includes somatic, emotional, and cognitive processing and integration. SP enables clients to discover and change habitual physical and psychological patterns that impede optimal functioning and wellbeing. It can be helpful in working with dysregulated activation and other effects of trauma, as well as the limiting belief systems of developmental issues.

Trauma-Sensitive Yoga

Trauma-informed yoga addresses the specific needs and symptoms of trauma survivors. Teachers are trained to be conscious of trauma and understand how trauma intersects with yoga practice. It often includes self-regulation strategies to increase body awareness in a safe and controlled way, which can promote feelings of physical, emotional, and psychological safety. It can also address nervous system dysregulation, dissociation, and feelings of disconnection from the body or surroundings, which are common after experiencing trauma.

Trauma-informed stabilization treatment (TIST)

TIST approaches the challenges of treating self-destructive behavior. It integrates mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, ego state techniques, and Internal Family Systems and addresses the challenges of treating individuals with a range of complicated struggles, including complex PTSD, borderline personality, bipolar disorder, addictive and eating disorders, and dissociative disorders.
