Trauma Therapist
Lisa van Leeuwen is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and a clinical therapist at Sustainable Wellness. She completed her Master of Social Work degree from Roberts Wesleyan College in 2013 and currently provides individual therapy to teens and adults at the practice.
Lisa is passionate about providing a safe and therapeutic space for those who have experienced childhood, sexual, race- or gender-based, and combat-related trauma. She uses de-escalation and grounding techniques, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and other modalities in her approach to supporting clients through the healing process.Â
Lisa developed her therapeutic approach working with a diverse population of individuals, parents, couples, and families. She’s sensitive to racial, cultural, occupational, economic, and social justice-related influences on how we experience and heal from trauma.
Lisa has been providing support for more than 20 years through mental health counseling, parenting skills training, crisis intervention, suicide prevention and mind-body wellness. She’s been counseling military veterans through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs for the past 8 years. She has extensive experience working with military couples and families, neurodiversity, parenting disagreements, and co-parenting during or after divorce or separation.
Lisa is the mother to four grown children, a Red-Lored Amazon parrot, and two cats. She practices mindfulness meditation, fasting and regular exercise for health and wellness. Music and reading have a constant presence in Lisa’s life. She enjoys studying history, cooking and learning just about anything new.
