Family Therapy
Approximate length of each session:
60-90 mins
In our trauma-informed approach with families, we look at the family as a whole and explore the family story and journey, and how stress and trauma has impacted the entire family system. Our family therapists are trained to support and guide families in recognizing the interconnected dynamics and how these dynamics shape their communication and relationships. Together with our family therapists, family members are able to explore, identify, and learn different ways of coping with stress, pain, and trauma, which extends beyond individual healing and into breaking generational cycles.
While families come to us with a variety of issues, below are some examples of what we typically address in family counseling:
Attachment issues
Boundaries
Communication struggles
Parent-child relationships
Conflict resolution
PTSD/trauma (one or more of the family members have experienced trauma that is impacting the family as a whole)
The length of therapy will be determined by your family's needs and goals. However, it's recommended to schedule at least one session weekly during the initial phase of treatment. Sessions will often be phased out with 2-3 weeks breaks as you and your family progress towards your goals. You may terminate treatment at any time, however it is helpful to have at least one session together to summarize progress, identify remaining work needed, and to say goodbye.
Please note that family therapy is typically not covered by insurance, because no mental health diagnosis exists for this type of counseling. Please contact your insurance company for further details about your coverage.
